TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 95-011a

DATE: NOVEMBER 11, 1995 SUBJECT: SOUND PCB LED DIAGNOSTIC ERROR CODES TO: ALL DISTRIBUTORS GAME: PINBALL MAGICÔ REASON FOR BULLETIN: TROUBLESHOOTING TOOL FOR SOUND BOARD AFFECTS S/N’s: ALL led 2 SOUND NORMAL OPERATION: PCB LED 1 GOES BRIGHT THEN DIMS 4 TIMES PER SECOND. LED 2 ON CONSTANTLY. MONITORS +5VDC SUPPLY. led 1 FOLLOWING FIND THE SEQUENCE TO FOLLOW FOR TROUBLESHOOTING A SOUND BOARD: 1. UPON POWER UP AND DURING SOUND BOARD RESET LED 1 WILL BE ON. 2. LED 1 WILL TURN OFF JUST BEFORE THE CPU BEGINS THE STARTUP SOUND BOARD SYSTEM CHECK. 3. IF THE CPU FINDS AN ERROR ON THE SOUND BOARD, LED 1 WILL BLINK (ONE SECOND PER BLINK) IN A PATTERN TO INDICATE WHAT PROBLEM HAS BEEN FOUND. THERE WILL ALSO BE A ‘BONG’ TONE EMITTED FROM THE SPEAKERS EACH TIME LED 1 BLINKS. REFER TO THE ‘BLINKS/BONG’ ERROR CODE CHART TO IDENTIFY THE ERROR FOUND.

DIAGNOSTIC TEST TONES THIS TEST IS TO HELP FURTHER TROUBLESHOOT SOUND BOARD PROBLEMS: 1. TURN POWER OFF. 2. REMOVE ROM U28 ON THE SOUND BOARD. 3. TURN POWER BACK ON (IGNORE 2 BLINKS OF LED 1, U28 ERROR ). NOTE: LED 1 WILL REMAIN CONSTANTLY ON (DIM) DURING THE TEST TONES. NOW A DIAGNOSTIC TEST TONE OF 1KHZ IS REPEATEDLY MADE BY BOTH U22 AND U23 MPEG CHIPS AT A FIXED VOLUME LEVEL OF 8. BOTH TONES SHOULD BE MADE AT THE SAME TIME (THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY PHASE DIFFERENCES), AND FROM THE SPEAKERS IT SHOULD SOUND LIKE THERE IS ONLY ONE TONE.
